The fifth pillar, immunotherapy

Jun 3, 2016 | Oncology

For many years the cornerstone of cancer treatment has been surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy. But this is changing, today the star is immunotherapy , a treatment that takes advantage of the potential of the patient's immune system to fight their own disease.

One approach, known as adoptive T-cell transfer, involves modifying the patient's immune cells to recognize and attack their own tumors. This has been restricted to only small clinical trials, but many treatments using engineered immune cells have shown significant responses in patients with advanced stage cancer.
